The swivel-mounted head (2) and foot (3) sections of the bed, couch etc. can be adjusted by setting mechanisms which are mounted on a common stop housing (5). They can be biased in the setting direction by a common power accumulator such as a tension spring (20) which can be connected to the relevant drive members (14) of the articulated chains (6, 7). The setting mechanism at the head can be blocked in various positions by ratchet means (22, 23, 24). Since the two setting mechanisms are combined in one fitment dependent on a single spring, manufacture and assembly costs are low whilst the bed can be fully adjusted by a person reclining on the bed since the head section is automatically raised up by the spring when the ratchets are released.
