Stable, dried aluminium hydroxide gel - prepd. by drying gel from non-aq. solvents

In the drying of aq. Al(OH)3 gel to afford a stable dried Al(OH)3 meeting USP (18th revision) specifications, aq. liq. is replaced by an H2O-miscible non-aq. solvent (I), and the gel is then dried to afford an acid-reactive, dried amorphous powder contg. 50-56.8% Al2O&. (I) may be a 1-5C alkanol (opt. mixed with is not >50% of C6H6 and toluene), or a 2-4C ketone. Dried Al2O3 gels are stable and highly reactive (same level of acid reactivity as a liq. gel), and also (unlike known dried gels) retain acid consuming capacity on storage. Antacid tablets prepd. from solid material are as effective clinically as liq. gels.
