The roof ventilation system comprises a long box type structure (3) with a cover (10) which can be folded out to open. The cover is at such a distance from the top edge of the box that along at least one side of the box a sideways ventilation aperture is available. A plate structure screens the ventilation aperture, but also permits the ventilation function of that aperture. Between the side walls of the plate structure and the outwards foldable cover, side flaps (13) are provided which can close the apertures between the plate structure and the cover.
