The stretch-wrapping machine encloses palletised loads in sheet material. A compensation mechanism is provided to counteract the effect of irregularities caused when pulling the sheet off the storage roll, due to the rectangular shape of the pallet or the reducing roll diameter. Typically this can be effected by a jockey roller (4) on a swing arm, and on which a constant force acts. The braking torque on the storage roll (2) can also be reduced in a predetermined proportion to the deflection angle of the roller.
