NEW MATERIAL:2-Phenoxyanthraquinone polysulfonic acid or its salts expressed by formula I: (M is H, Na, K, or NH4; n is 1 or 2). EXAMPLE:Sodium 2-phenoxy anthraquinone tetrasulfonate. USE:Intermediates for dyes and pharmaceuticals, and oxidation-reduction reagents for wet desulfurization process, particularly the Stretford Process. PROCESS:The 2-phenoxyanthraquinone polysulfonic acid or its salts are prepared by any one of the following methods: (1) 2-Phenoxyanthraquinone is sulfonated with fuming sulfuric acid, sulfur trioxide or chlorosulfonic acid under heating. (2) 2-(p-Phenoxybenzoyl) benzoic acid is sulfonated with a sulfonating agent consisting of fuming sufluric, sulfuric acids, sulfur trioxide, or chlorosulfonic acid under heating. (3) Compound of formula II is subjected to dehydration, ring closure, and sulfonation in fuming sulfuric acid under heating to give the objective compounds.
