Catalyst is produced by decomposing gaseous Ni(CO)4 opt. diluted with inert gas e.g. N2, CO, CO2, in oils or liquid fats at 50-250 degrees C, forming homogenous suspension of Ni. Decomposition pref. is carried out in oil or fat which is already hardened and has been treated with filtration aid or carrier e.g. kieselguhr, bentonite or bleaching earth. After decomposition, cooled suspension can be made into flakes using double roll. Process is simple and avoid stage involving high temp reduction of NiO or other Ni cpds.
