Process comprises calcining lime or limestone (opt. with MgO or magnesite) with silica, the molar ratio of CaO to MgO being 1 : 0 - 1 and the silica being present in at least 4% stoichiometric excess, pref. 8 - 25% excess. Suitably dolomite is the Ca Mg source. - The synth. material is useful for industrial ceramics.
