Button clamp can rise and fall above a sewing machine stitch plate, which serves as a support for the button carrier material and the material with corresponding buttonholes. The clamp has a spreader which engages the respective buttonhole to open, and hold open, the buttonhole, which was closed before descent of the clamp.
