<p>Sodium, potassium and lithium homopolymers and copolymers of conjugated dienes, homopolymers of vinyl monomers, and copolymers of conjugated dienes and vinyl monomers terminated with an aliphatic or aromatic-acetal or ketal group which is an hydroxyl carrier are produced by (a) polymerizing or copolymerizing one or more conjugated dienes containing 4 to 6 carbon atoms or (b) homopolymerizing a vinyl monomer or (c) copolymerizing such a conjugated diene and a vinyl monomer, in the presence of an initiator of the class consisting of a compound of the formula: or in which Alk Met stands for potassium, sodium or lithium, R1 is a branched- or straight-chain or cyclo-alkyle? group of 3 to 20 carbon atoms or phenylene or alkyl phenylene in which each alkyl group contains 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and R2, R3 and R4 are hydrocarbon aliphatic or aromatic substituents. These terminally reactive polymers are useful as intermediates for chain-extended polymers which may be used as adhesives, binders, potting compounds, caulking compounds, sealants, and also many types of molded articles.</p> |
