O F T H E D I S C L O S U R E A method of calcining solid materials on a downdraught travelling grate prior to treatment at a higher temperature on a continuously operating kiln, wherein heat for said calcining is obtained by drawing hot gaseous effluent from the kiln into the travelling grate through the solids discharge outlet thereof, in which additional heat is induced into a downstream portion of the travelling grate by incinerating combustible waste on the bed in the downstream portion of the travelling grate.
