The sheets arrive in the machine via the bottom, by sliding upwards on the upper surface of a guide plate (L). These sheets are entrained between that side (14) of the belt which is ascending in the direction of the arrow (8) and a series of idlers (10). The belt is of the endless type, with a side (15) descending in the direction of the arrow (9). This belt is stretched between two rollers (4 and 5); between the two sides, rollers (6 or 7) face each idler (10). Between each idler (10), a deflecting member enables the sheets to be deflected along the arrows (11) towards one of the racks (bins) (12) to be filled. A screen (36) prevents a sheet, while being deflected towards a rack (bin), from being inopportunely entrained by the next idler. A light ray, emitted by a lamp (34) and received by a photocell (35), is interrupted each time a sheet passes. An electrical circuit, controlled by this light ray, enables the deflecting member which has just operated to be put back into the non-deflecting position and the next deflecting member to be put into the deflecting position. This machine is used for forming bundles of paper sheets at the output of a printer. <IMAGE>
