Optical fibres 14 and 16 are spliced together between three supporting rods (18, Fig. 5) in heat- contractible jacket 12 having a port (22, Figs. 4 & 5) through which epoxy adhesive is applied to the fibre ends after the fibres have been correctly positioned with the aid of microscope 64 and light source 68. Splicing is effected on platform 28 having fibre retaining clips 32 and 34, jacket 12 being situated in recess 30 connected to a recess in the lower side of platform 28 by aperture 40, the lower recess containing heater element 50. After application of adhesive, heater 50 is switched on and hot air rises through aperture 40 to contract jacket 12. <IMAGE> |
