The heat treatment may be effected by passing the package through a heat shrink tunnel, a hot-water bath or an atmosphere of steam. In a shrink tunnel jets of hot air are directed on to one or both faces of the margins and in the latter instance the jets are controlled to maintain the margins in suspension. The plastics film may be heat shrinkable.
