Novel 12H-dibenzo[d,g][1,3]dioxocine-6-carboxylic acids of the general formula wherein X and Y are each a hydrogen or halogen atom and R is a hydrogen atom or C 1-4 alkyl group, and, when R is a hydrogen atom, pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof with inorganic or organic bases are prepared by reaction of a salt of a 2,2<SP>1</SP>-methylene-bisphenol of the general formula with a dihaloacetic acid or a C 1-4 alkyl ester or salt thereof, followed optionally by esterification of a product wherein R is a hydrogen atom to give the corresponding product wherein R is a C 1-4 alkyl group or conversion of a resulting salt to the corresponding free acid. Pharmaceutical compositions having hypolipidemic activity comprise, as active ingredient, a 12H - dibenzo[d,g][1,3]dioxocine - 6 - carboxylic acid of the first general formula above or, when R is a hydrogen atom, a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof with an inorganic or organic base, together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, and may be administered orally or parenterally. |
