1443078 Production of ethyl phenols LABOFINA SA 3 Jan 1975 [19 Feb 1974] 7550/74 Heading C2C A process for producing ethylphenol from diethylbenzene comprises the steps of oxidizing diethylbenzene into diethylbenzene monohydroperoxide, withdrawing the reaction mixture, separating a major part of the unconverted diethylbenzene therefrom to obtain a hydroperoxide concentrate containing at least 40% of diethylbenzene monohydroperoxide, mixing said concentrate with a solvent selected from C 1-4 aliphatic alcohols and ketones or mixtures thereof, decomposing said hydroperoxide by intimate contact with an acid chosen from sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, sulphonic acids, Lewis acids and ion-exchange resins in order to obtain a decomposition mixture consisting essentially of residual diethylbenzene, ethylphenol, acetaldehyde, solvent and oxygenated aromatic by-products, and treating the said mixture under conditions adapted for the hydrogenation of these by-products and then recovering ethylphenol and diethylbenzene from the reaction mixture. Preferably the solvent and the acetaldehyde are removed from the decomposition mixture before the hydrogenation of the oxygenated aromatic by-products.
|
