Acrolein is oxidized to acrylic acid in the presence of an oxide of W, V, Mo, and optionally>=1 of Cu, Sn, and Ce, deposited as a thin layer on the surface or an inter particulate support of diameter >= 20 microns. Thus, 25g 10-30 mesh alundum was wetted 1.03cm3 water and tumbled with 6.25g W1.2 V3 Mo12 Ox catalyst powder to give a supported catalyst. Passing 1:10:6 acrolein-air-steam over the supported catalyst at heating bath temp. 260≦̸C and contact time 2.1 sec gave conversion 93.6%, acrylic acid selectivity 93.7% and yield 87.7%, and acetic acid yield 0%, with an exotherm of 9≦̸C.
