The self-propelled machine is for utilisation in the construction or maintenance of permanent way railway lines, and in tightening sleeper-bolts and similar. The machine has a hydraulic motor (1) with direct drive to a vertical shaft (2) incorporating a socket spanner (7), and includes a torque-indicator (11-16) which acts on the shaft (2) or a torque governer. The motor is controlled by a distributor-switch (3) fed from a power unit. A pressure limiting mechanism which governs torque may be included between the hydraulic pump and the motor (1). The torque indicator may incorporate a radial lug (11) on the shaft (2). The lug (2) contacts one end of a rocking lever (13) of which the other end acts on a ram (15) coupled to a calibrated manometer (16).
