<p>In the extrusion of ceramic masses as described in the parent patent, the improvement comprises the use of an extrusion die in which the differences in the elastic flexure in the twisting of the mass are eliminated or reduced. This is achieved by subjecting the mass to expansion in the quadrants of compression in the tool, and to compression in the quadrants of expansion, the absolute values not being below the predetermined expansion on the periphery of the mass. The die has an oval inlet adjacent to the extrusion screw driving the mass through the die towards a rectangular die outlet. The torsional stresses on the ceramic mass are reduced so the distortion of the extrudate during drying and baking is reduced; fissures in the extrudate caused by torsional stresses are also reduced or eliminated.</p> |
