The disc brake (10) had a recess (16) in one side. The recess extends towards the braking surface (14) of the disc to a predetermined distance from the surface, corresponding to the maximum allowable wear of the surface. When the disc wears through this distance, a p in (22) engages in the opening recess to indicate that disc replacement is required. The end of the pin (22) may be rounded so that it drops into and out of the opened recess as the disc rotates. A corresponding arrangement may be provided for the other disc surface.
