A short-term heating of a surface layer lying in a rail foot range to temp. between Ac3-point (critical temp.) and 1100 degrees C, followed by cooling which mainly takes place by abducting the heat into the unheated part of the rail cross-section, reduces sensitivity to brittle fracture of rails, particularly naturally hard rail steels, and increases notch impact strength. Pref. heated surface layer runs through temp. range between 1000 to 200 degrees C in 200 to 1000 secs.
|
