A mixt. is made of fine solids and at least one addn. which is sprayed as a mist onto the solids via a nozzle. The nozzle consists of a central pipe (a) with the longitudinal profile of a Laval nozzle; and pipe (a) has at least one side inlet pipe (b) entering towards the end of the diverging part of the nozzle (a) or at its outlet. The addn. is fed via pipe (b) into the nozzle, whereas a spraying fluid is fed through the central pipe (a). The spraying fluid is pref. preheated, and is esp. steam, whereas the addn. is a binder, and/or a solvent, and/or a flux. The pref. solids are fine coal. Esp. the conversion of fine coal with poor or no coking properties into coke for use in a blast furnace. The process may, however, be used for capturing fine dust in filtering plant, or for granulating material (e.g. slag) contg. fertilising elements such as P, N2 and/or potassium.
