A pickling apparatus for, e.g. pickling zirconium canned fuel element clusters in a hydrofluoric-nitric acid mixture, comprises a vertical polypropylene vessel 1, and storage vessels 7, 8, 9 from which pickling and rinsing liquids are forced by compressed air or nitrogen through the vessel 1 into a surge tank 10. When a high level indicator 11 is operated, the liquid is forced back into the storage tank, until operation of a low level indicator reverses the process. This arrangement for feeding the liquid causes an oscillatory turbulent flow of liquid in the vessel. |
