Vinyl chloride is polymerized in bulk or in the presence of a minor amount of a diluent at below 0‹ C. in the presence as catalyst of (a) 0À05-3% based on monomer of an organic hydroperoxide, (b) less than 0À5% of sulphur dioxide, the molar ratio of (a): (b) being 1:15 to 15:1 and (c) 0À1-10% of an aliphatic C 1 -C 6 mono- or di-hydroxy alcohol. Up to 20% of a comonomer may be present. The diluent, in minor proportion, may be a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon. The product has high syndiotacticity and has terminal sulphonic acid groups.
