Rechargeable accumulator has a neutral electrolyte and negative and positive electrodes. The electrolyte consists of a perchlorate soln. of the metal used for the negative electrode, e.g. zn, or a more positive cation, whilst the positive electrode is an inert conductor, pref. Mn, An air-permeable cover is used. Since the electrolyte is strongly hygroscopic, no gas barrier is needed to prevent it drying out at average atmos huminity. It does not react with gases in the atmos. and deposits a massive reactive material (metal and metal oxide) on the electrodes, without gas evolution. It gives high energy discharge, even about 20 degrees C, can be made from cheap materials and is esp. useful for impulse or short term operation, e.g. for starting vehicles, spot welding, high power signals etc.
|
