The inertia switch consists of a metal sphere (1) seated on a conical surface comprising two contacts (4) insulated (5) from one another. The sphere is held in place by an electromagnet consisting of a coil wound around a core. The two insulated contacts also form the electromagnet core. The conical surface is the bottom of a container holding the sphere. A jolt moves the sphere and breaks the electrical circuit between the contacts.
