The pattern recognition system is especially for the investigation of biological specimens typically the evaluation of nuclear and cytoplasmic structures and cell patterns. An object field is surveyed in two different directions. A video signal is developed which is representative of the object in the field of view. The image is scanned and converted into an analogue signal passed to an analogue-digital converter and then submitted to a digital output and recording device. The digital signal is equated with the mean value of the video signal during a representative time period. The digital signal frequency is less than the scanning frequency.
