The path of an escalator or moving staircase includes a sloping part where the treads follow a transition curve intended to give the shortest length without undue discomfort to the usters. Thus curve is preferably an involute curve, with the over-all angle of slope divided up into short sections, each with its own radius of curvature. An alternative curve may be used, approximating to an involute curve, giving the same horizontal acceleration to the user. When the slop is too great, the acceleration is excessive.
