Material is made from bonded fibrous of laminated silicates. The bonding agent consists of a peptisation agent in a satd. soln., part real and part colloidal, of alkali zincates and/or alkali aluminates in the presence of phosphates or diphosphates and/or a similar soln. of an alkaline earth aluminate. Possibly the soln. also contains a non-colloidal solid phase. The silicate mineral and the bonding agent are mixed with a 600% excess of water. The pulp formed is dewatered on a screen, dried and hardened at a temp =200 degrees C. A light-wt., refractory, waterproof product is obtd.
