Radio chemical wood processing - by impregnating with vinyl monomer and irradiating with gamma rays

In processing wood by impregnation with vinyl monomer followed by irradiation with gamma-radiation of Co-60 to polymerise the monomer, the wood is also irradiated before impregnation with monomers at an integral dose of 2-100 Mrad and the irradiation after impregnation is effected at an integral dose of 1 to 30 Mrad, according to the monomer used. Pref. the pre-impregnation irradiation is effected wity gamma-radiation of 2 to 25 rad/S, and is carried out in a medium of inert gas, e.G. argon or nitrogen. The pre-irradiation creates a "soft" ageing of the wood similar to the natural ageing process and creates suitable conditions for grafting the monomer on the wood so as to increase dimensional stability. The wood-plastic prod. is esp. useful for musical instruments.
