A method for cleavage of an ether comprises treating the ether with the chloroiodite of a quaternary ammonium tensioactive compound of the general formula (I> <IMAGE> (in which: R<1> and R<2> are the same or different and each represents a C1-C4 alkyl group; R<3> represents a C1-C4 alkyl group, a C10-C18 alkyl group or a benzyl group; and R<4> represents a benzyl group, a 2- benzyloxy-ethyl group or a 2-[(p- 1,1,3- tetramethylbutylphenoxy)-ethoxy] ethyl group; or, the group R<1>R<2>R<3>N<+> represents the pyridinium cation and R<4> is a C10-C18 alkyl group) dissolved in an aqueous solution of a chloride or bromide of the same or of another quaternary ammonium tensioactive compound. The method may be used for example in the treatment of a locus polluted with an ether. <IMAGE> |
