The flicker suppressor is designed for use with arc furnaces for melting steel. The suppressor system includes a detector to measure the level of flicker and a comparator to compare this level with a reference representing the permissible flicker rate. When the upper reference is exceeded for a given time a control pulse is generated that changes the load staging switch to a lower secondary voltage stage. When the lower reference is fallen below, the voltage stage is raised.
