A method for the determination of the frequency-dependent transmission attenuation of a hybrid circuit in a telephone connection between two exchanges at the interconnection from a four-wire to a two-wire line, which cannot be directly selected, also permits automatic periodic testing to check whether the required transmission characteristics are maintained. The test is carried out by executing in any desired order the following tests: measurement of the frequency-dependent attenuation of the four-wire line in both directions with the remote end of the two-wire line open and/or short-circuited; measurement of the frequency dependent attenuation of the lines between the exchanges; and measurement of the lines between the exchanges in the opposite direction.
