The invention comprises a non-woven, fibrillar, needle-punched structure consisting of a plurality of layers of fibrillatable oriented polymeric film bonded together. Specified polymers are polypropylene, polyethylene, poly-(4- methyl-pentene-1), polyethylene terephthalate, poly(hexamethylene adipate) and polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride and copolymers thereof. Adjacent layers preferably have their directions of orientation at right-angles. Sufficiently heavy needle-punching will fibrillate the fibres and cause bonding by interengagement of fibrils between layers. If such interengagement is not produced an adhesive may be used to cause bonding, adhesive properties preferably being developed after fibrillation. Specified adhesives are latices and thermoplastic films, powders and fibres; the structure may be built up from extrusion-laminated films comprising an adhesive component and a fibrillatable component (e.g. polyethylene/polypropylene). The film assembly may be associated with webs, e.g. woven, staple fibre or continuous filament webs of flax, cotton, silk, regenerated cellulose, glass fibre, mineral fibre or synthetic fibres of polyester, polyamide or polyolefin, the fibres of which assist the bonding of the structure. A film assembly may be sandwiched between two webs. |
