Forming three-dimensional mouldings from sheet moulding compound - with prior application of opt. pigmented thermosetting resin powder to mould walls to provide surface finish

In forming 3-D shaped mouldings from SMC, the improvement comprises wholly or partly providing the mould walls at an elevated temp. with one or more layers of opt. pigmented thermosetting resin powder (I) contg. catalyst and melting and polymerising (I). The mould is then charged with SMC comprising thermosetting resin, hardener and mineral fillers and subjected to pressure at an elevated temp. Application of (I) provides the mouldings with smooth, decorative and/or protective finishes. The mouldings are highly heat resistant, scratch resistant and also resistant to household chemicals. Wash basins, shower basins, baths, kitchen slabs, drip trays for cooking appliances may be formed.
