Aromatic sulphides are prepared by treating an aromatic hydrocarbon, halide or ether with sulphur chlorides in the presence of a catalyst which is iron, aluminium, aluminium amalgam, a Lewis acid or a protonic acid. Aryl sulphides are useful as pesticides against moths, herbicides, lubricants, antioxidants, organic semi-conductors, and intermediates in the preparation of pharmaceutical products, oil additives, and other sulphide derivatives. |
