A riveting apparatus for setting tubular rivets 13 comprises a mandrel 11 having tubular rivets mounted thereon and having a head 12, a pair of jaws 14 through which the rivets are fed one at a time and against which they abut as the mandrel is withdrawn and pneumatic rivet feeding means to feed the rivet through the jaws, the feeding means applying a force to the rivets on the mandrel and not to the mandrel. The jaws are spring urged together and mounted on a barrel 15. The barrel has three pistons 29 mounted on it and the housing 23 of the apparatus has three cylinders 26 formed therein by partitions 28. The mandrel end is gripped by grippers 19 and the barrel 15 is spring urged rightwards by a helical spring 31. In operation, the trigger 37 is depressed manually to move a valve member 36 and admit compressed air through passages 34, 35 to the rear of the pistons 29. The pistons are moved leftwards and force the leading rivet 41 over the mandrel to deform the shank of the rivet. Upon release of the trigger 37, the pistons move rightwards under spring bias and the next rivet is fed through the jaws. The rivet feed means comprises a piston 42 slidably mounted on the mandrel and which is urged leftwards by compressed air admitted to the rear of the piston upon the return of the pistons 29. The compressed air is supplied via passages 49, 51 to a chamber 55 but is prevented from moving the piston until the passage 58 on the barrel 15 is to the left of the O-ring 60 which only occurs after a rivet upsetting stroke. The piston 42 acts through a spring 43 on the rearmost rivet to force the leading rivet through the jaws. No compressive force is applied to the mandrel during the feed. In an alternative similar embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the mandrel grippers (73) are operated pneumatically and the rivet feed means is arranged so that if the mandrel is not gripped by the grippers the compressed air supplied to move the feed piston 42 is vented to the atmosphere. Further the apparatus of this embodiment is controlled by a foot pedal (83). |
