A hydraulic turbine consists of a disc mounted on a shaft with its axis inclined at a small angle to the vertical. The outer surface of the disc is divided into compartments by two concentric walls and a number of equally spaced radial walls. Water flows into the compartments on the high side of the disc and causes it to rotate. When the water reaches the lowest point of the disc it flows out between hinged flaps. The turbine speed is adjusted by changing the inclination of the disc axis.
