The vacuum valve opens and shuts a pipe leading into a sealed housing, having an oblique seat formed by the pipe wall and against which a valve plate slides. This is moved by an actuator passing out through a vacuum-tight seal. The actuator (15) slides in a plane at an acute angle to that formed by the valve seat (8), and hinges on the valve plate (11). When the plate is lifted off its seat, it pivots about an axis at right angles to that of the pipe.
