The outsides of windows and buildings can be cleaned by an automatic unit which may be raised and lowered alongside the building facade by upright guide elements (10, 11) so as to cover at least the height of a window (16). The unit comprises a supply container (17) which can be filled with a cleaning solution, a wash element (29) connected to the supply container and a scraper unit (40) which follows on from the wash element in the operating direction. The guide elements are pref. in the form of guide rails (12, 13) which keep the unit at an even distance from the window or building surface.
