Dentifrice with improved cleansing and polishing action - contg. abrasive agent together with zinc cpd. to reduce abrasion of dental enamel

Dentifrice with improved cleansing and polishing properties contains >=1 abrasive agent with a particle dia. of 1-15 mu, and a non-toxic Zn cpd. in an amt. of >=0.0065 wt. %. The abrasive agent is either (a) Ca pyrophosphate in an amt. of >=7.5 wt. % or (b) a hard abrasive agent selected from calcined Al2O3, Zr, silicate, crystalline SiO2, Ca silicate, KAlSi3O8 sand, SiC, pumice, ilmenite, CeO2, Fe2O3, ZrO2, SnO2 and topaz in an amt. to give the dentrifice a radioactively determined enamel abrasion (REA) value of >=400. When the abrasive is Ca pyrophosphate, the Zn cpd. is ZnO and is pre-mixed with the Ca pyrophosphate before incorporating into the dentifrice. When the abrasive is Zr silicate or crystalline SiO2, the Zn cpd. is ZnCl2 and/or ZnO. Incorporation of a Zn cpd. reduces the effect of the abrasive agent on the dental enamel without adversely affecting its effectiveness in removing resistant flecks and food residues from the tooth surface, so that a good polishing and cleansing effect is obtd. without the risk of damage to the enamel.
