<p>derivs. of formula (I) are new (where R is 1-16C alkyl, Ph or benzyl). They may be prepd. by reacting an amino-acetamide of formula (II) H2N-CH2-CO-NH-R (II) with >=1 mole (pref. 2-5) of S2X2 (where X is Br or Cl) for 10-18 hrs at -10 to +60 degrees C. A solvent, e.g. DMF or HMPA may be used. (I) have wide spectrum antimicrobial and antifungal activities. They can be used for inhibiting rot in fruit and vegetables and esp. for treating diseases caused by Pseudomonas, Xanthomonas, Erwinia and Corynebacterium spp. microorganisms. (I) may be used to impregnate or coat paper, cotton, wool, nylon, wood, glass, etc. They may be be used to cleanse the skin before surgery or for treating acne, partic. inflammatory acne, and are effective at 1-5 ppm, yet cause no irritation even at 2500 ppm. They may also be used for control of microorganisms, fungi and algae in aqs. systems, e.g. swimming pools or in the paper industry, e.g. at 0.5-5 ppm. A typical cpd. is 2-n-dodecyl-1,2,5-thiadiazol-3-one.</p> |
