The nematic liquid-crystal compounds are 4,4'-substituted derivatives of phenyl thioesters of cyclohexene-1-carboxylic acid and conform to the formula I, in which the substituents R1 and R2 are as defined in Claim 1. The liquid-crystal compounds of the formula I are particularly suitable for use in liquid-crystal display cells based on the field effect or on dynamic scattering. These nematic liquid crystals allow display cells to be built which can be operated in a broad temperature range at low operating voltages, have a high response speed, give a clear display and have long operating lives. <IMAGE>
