The floating mirror is used for the concentration of sunlight, and it consists of the enclosing surface of a body filled with buoyant gas. Either the complete structure is buoyant, or it is so constructed that weight and buoyancy cancel each other out or nearly so. The form of the mirror can be stabilised by an annular torus, subjected to the pressure of the compressed buoyancy gas, or its curvature may be ensured by a vacuum in the space behind it.
|
