Mfr. of plastics runnings surfaces for skis comprises first heat-moulding a semi-finished or intermediate rod. from plastics powder from which thin sheets are then sliced off from which the running surfaces of the skis are cut. The plastics powder is blended with an additive before being hot moulded. The additive is heat-stable or has a structure that it is independent from the plastics matrix when heated, so that it can be removed from or out of the same as the thin sheets are sliced off the semi-prod. The plastics is polyethylene, an endless band being 'pared' and sliced off the intermediate moulding. The heatstable additive is PTFE powder, present at 5-10% based on wt. of the polyethylene matrix. The operation results in a thin sheet with rough or porous surface which will accept and retain a coating of wax thus improving the gliding characteristics of the ski. The thin sheet is finally laminated to the underside of the ski.
|
