PURPOSE:To isomerize (R)-alpha-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl-(R)-2-(4-chlorophenyl)- isovalerate in a nonpolar solvent into the title compound useful as insecticides, by adding a basic catalyst slightly soluble in the solvent to the isovalerate. CONSTITUTION:A basic catalyst, e.g. basic ion exchange resin, etc., which is slightly soluble in a nonpolar solvent, e.g. benzene, etc. or an aprotic polar solvent, e.g. ethyl acetate, etc., is added to a solution of (R)-alpha-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl (R)-2-(4-chlorophenyl)-isovalerate in the solvent to isomerize the carbon atom at the 3-phenoxybenzyl position. The reaction is carried out at preferably -20-150 deg.C. According to the method, a particularly powerful insecticide (S)-alpha-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl (S)-2-(4-chlorophenyl)-isovalerate can be obtained. |
