Cooling of the outer surface of a continuously produced casting directly after leaving the casting machine mould is effected by a cooling plate zone, where one or more pairs of plates are in direct contact with the casting surface. - The plates participate in the forward motion of the casting staying in contact with it. - Pref., the plates are U shaped and have on the surface in contact with the casting, grooves with drilled holes through which coolant sprayed against the back face of the plate is passed to the front face. - This method of support accompanied by cooling is more effective than present methods and prevents breakout of liquid metal from the interior of the casting, its surface being fully supported.
