PURPOSE:To obtain optical fiber which effectively transmit near infrared and middle infared region rays and of an easy-to-produce and low-cost by heat-stretching a chalcogen base amorphous semiconductor and making the refractive index of the central part thereof slightly higher than that of the outside circumferential part. CONSTITUTION:Platinum-made double crucibles 1 similar to the ones used in pnoduction of glass fibers for optical communication are used for production of the optical guide cable for infrared rays. Raw materials 2, 3 are both chalcogenide amorphous materials, but the material on the inner side is required to be slightly higher in refractive index than the outer material and be analogous in properties. If the materials are heated to temperatures fairly higher than their softening points, the optical guide calbe 4 continuously composed of inside and outside two layers may be obtained. Such cable production needs be carried out in an inert atmosphere, if possible, in argon, in order to avoid entry of exygen. |
