SYNTHESIS OF RACEMIC 2-DEUTERO-3-FLUORO-ALANINE AND ITS SALTS, AND INTERMEDIATES THEREFOR

There is provided a process for preparing racemates of 2-deutero-3-fluoro-alanine and its salts by converting 3fluoro-pyruvic acid, its hydrate or salt thereof to racemic 2deutero-3-fluoro-alanine by reductive amination utilizing an alkali metal borodeuteride to form a salt of 2-deutero-3-fluoro-DL-alanine which is a most useful intermediate in the preparation of 2-deutero-3-fluoro-D-alanine, a potent antibacterial agent effective in inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria of both gram positive and gram negative type.
