Titanium trihalide treated with alkyl-aluminium dihalide - for use as catalyst component in olefin polymerise.

A Ti trihalide for use as a catalyst component in olefin polymerisation is prepd. by (a) reacting a Ti tetrahalide with an organoaluminium cpd. (I), and (b) treating the product with a soln. of an alkylaluminium dihalide (I) in a liq. hydrocarbon, the molar ratio of (I) to the Ti trihalide in the product from step (a) being 0.1-100:1 (pref. 1-10-1, 2-8:1). The treatment with (I) increases the activity and stereospecificity of polymerisation catalysts prepd. from the product.
