1292420 Seaming rubber GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 19 April 1971 [25 Feb 19701 20987/71 Heading B5K A tube splicer 20 comprises a pair of clamps 51, 52 in a clamp assembly 23, Fig. 1, for holding exposed ends of an unvulcanized rubber tube 21, Fig. 9, in aligned spaced relation, a cutter assembly 24 for engaging and cutting tube ends overhanging the clamps, and means, viz. a squeeze assembly 25, for moving at least one of the clamps to bring freshly cut ends of the tube into compressed splicing engagement. The cutter is moved through a generally rectangular pathway in a plane passing between the clamps and normal to the axis along which the clamp moves. The cutter is moved transversely between the clamps in cutting relation to the exposed tube ends, the cutters being retracted out of interfering relation with the clamps so that the freshly cut tube ends can be moved into splicing engagement. As described the squeeze assembly comprises a pair of squeeze tables 30, 31, Fig. 1; table 30 is normally fixed but capable of small adjustment. The table 31 is reciprocated by a pneumatic cylinder 36 and a linkage 37, Fig. 3, controlled by a time switch and limit switch 47, Fig. 1. The clamps 51, 52 are adjustable to. accommodate different sized tubes, and are operated by clamp presses 53, 54, Fig. 1, and pneumatic cylinders 68, and are controlled by vertically spaced limit switches 75, 76, Fig. 2. The cutter assembly 24 comprises a cutter head 82 actuated by a pneumatic cylinder 86, Fig. 2, and carriage 83. The cutter head is secured to a chain belt 87 movable by an airhydraulic cylinder 92. Travel of the carriage is sensed by limit switches 93, 94, Fig. 2, and the position of the piston-rod 97 of cylinder 92 is sensed by limit switches 95, 96, Fig. 1. Cutting knives 100, 101, Fig. 9, are electrically heated and are guided by an assembly including cams 104 and cam followers 105. |
